Mindset Episode 028 | Verbal Condemnation

Mindset Episode 028 | Verbal Condemnation

A chat at an airfield turned into strong opinions about a news story, a baby injured by a robotic lawnmower.

It quickly turned into a round of “I would never leave my child unattended like that.”

And just like that, we were in the territory of what I call verbal condemnation.

It shows up in the dog world too.
“I would never rehome my dog.”
“My dog would never bite.”
“I only feed raw.”
These statements might sound factual and virtuous on the surface, but underneath, they often come from fear. Fear of pain. Fear of not being good enough. Fear of something similar happening to us.

In this mindset episode, I walk through how verbal condemnation works, what psychological defense mechanisms might be at play (think: projection, denial, displacement), and why it stings so much when we’re on the receiving end.

I also offer a few ways to recognize it in yourself, not to feel guilty about it, but to get curious about what it might be trying to protect you from.

Awareness is always the first step toward actually doing something about what scares us.

Mindset Episode 027 | Getting the Most Out of Your Time

Mindset Episode 027 | Getting the Most Out of Your Time

We say things like “I just want to get the most out of life” all the time, especially when it comes to our dogs, who already feel like they’re on borrowed time. But when you stop to really think about it…what does that even mean?

In this episode, I follow that thought down a bit of a rabbit hole. What does it actually mean to maximize life? For ourselves, for our dogs? Is it about time? Love? Impact? And who gets to decide whether we’ve done “enough”?

As always, I don’t land on a neat answer, but I do share a different way of looking at things, one that might feel like a bit of a relief if you’ve been chasing this invisible goal of doing everything right.

If you’ve ever felt like you’re running out of time but still aren’t sure what you’re supposed to be doing with it… this one’s for you. It’s also for you if want to know a little bit more about Dutch scientist Anthonie van Leeuwenhoek.Feeling the pressure to “do it all” with your dog (and your life)?

039 | Gunilla Pedersen on Burnout, Boundaries, and Not Being God

039 | Gunilla Pedersen on Burnout, Boundaries, and Not Being God

When your work is about helping others, whether it’s animals, people, or both, it can be hard to draw the line between care and self-sacrifice.

In this episode, I talk to Gunila Pedersen, a veterinarian who dealt with burnout, left the field, and then returned on her own terms after becoming a coach.

We talk about the pressure to be perfect, the weight of euthanasia decisions, what happens when clients can’t afford treatment, and how to live with imperfection in a system that tells you to do it all.

How it’s not just about boundaries but about giving yourself permission to be human.

For those who need to hear it Gunila talks about the benefits of using situational meds and about preparing for the real thing by practicing fun vet visits. No, (most) vets, don’t mind that you do this!!

We draw parallels to learning languages,  taking hammers to fridges and trying to be God.

Whether you’re a dog guardian who feels responsible for your dog’s every mood or a professional in the pet industry who struggles with not being able to help everyone you’ll find something in this conversation that resonates.

Mindset Episode 026 | Not wanting your dog to suffer because of your choices

Mindset Episode 026 | Not wanting your dog to suffer because of your choices

It’s not my dog’s fault I’m sick…
It’s not my dog’s fault work’s busy…

So, that means I have to put them first.
Not make them suffer for my choices.

What’s suffering though?
Are they suffering?
Are you?
When do you get to put yourself first?

That’s what this episode is about.
I give you some pointers as to how you can question your brain as well as some practical tips.

Is perfectionism getting in your way?

Struggling with guilt about not doing enough for you dog? And also struggling with being exhausted all the time? You don’t need the latest new planning tool (well, okay, you might want to get one if it makes you happy, no judgment here), but what you do need is a way to manage your thoughts around what’s your burden to carry and what’s not. Coaching helps.

Mindset episode 025 | Listening to Your No to Find Your Yes: How to Heed Your Gut to Find That No

In this episode of Ruff Around the Edges, I explore the power of starting with a “no” to gain clarity on what we truly want. By identifying what we’re not willing or able to do, we make it easier to figure out where we want to go — whether it’s choosing how to manage our dog’s behavior or making parenting decisions.

I also dive into the importance of listening to your body’s signals to understand when something is a genuine no, and when it’s simply fear trying to hold you back. I give some questions you can ask yourself to differentiate between discomfort that’s protective and discomfort that signals growth, so you can feel more confident you’re doing the right thing.

If you often find yourself struggling with the fear of disappointing others or second-guessing your choices, this episode will help you shift your perspective. I propose practical ways to honor your own needs while still being mindful of the people (and dogs!) you care about.

Do you worry about disappointing others?
